Modality is a term used in the Structuration theory of Anthony Giddens. In the Structuration theory agency, action and structure shape eachother in some kind of loop. Fundamental changes are possible trough a spiral process (Brand, Gaffikin, 2007). Modalities form the link between the different discourses within the structuration theory (Heracleous, Hendry, 2000). It forms the link between structure and interaction and communication. For example an interpretive scheme forms a modality between action and structure (Heracleous, Hendry, 2000).
