Validity claims are essential in the work of the philosopher and scientist Jurgen Habermas and his theories of communicative action. Validity claims are also key issues in philosophy of language.
Although Habermas never really explititely explained what a validity claim is we can give a brief description of what he meant with this term.
Habermas claims that people make claims on the truth as an outcome of communicative rationality. Therefore a claim on the truth is a logic outcome.
Within the validity claims Habermas claims that there are three different dimensions of validity. These are 1. Normative rightness, 2. theoretical truth and three expressive or subjective truthfullness.
In a discussion, different arguments are used to support the actors validity claim. in the discussion they use different arguments of the different types of validity as listed above. When one actor uses other types of claims than the other one you get a discussion with different kinds of arguments and therefore it becomes hard to keep the discussion going.
