Smooth space

In their book A Thousand Plateaux (orig. Capitalisme et Schizophrénie 2. Mille Plateaux) Gilles Deleuzes and Felix Guattariv introduce two types of space: the smooth and the striated space. They act as processes and continually change because each one is continually translating or intersecting into or by the other. These two spaces resist a clear binary or dialectic.

Deleuze and Guattari speak of smooth space as 'space is filled by events or haecceities, far more than by formed and perceived things. It is a space of affects, more than one of properties. It is haptic rather than optical perception' (1987). Smooth spaces refers to landscapes or environments in which subjects can operate, in fact smooth space allows subjects to spread in- and throughout space.
