Reflexive monitoring

Reflexive monitoring is a term used by Anthony Giddens in his Structuration Theory. In this theory he describes that all human action is taken place in a kind of social structure which is guided by a set of norms and laws and are differentfrom other social structures (Giddens, 1984).

According to Giddens agency, the continuous flow of conduct and change, can change these social structures and can lead to reproduct or transform society. Reflexive monitoring is another way to explain this whereby rationalization plays an important role. Reflexive monitoring is about the effectiveness from an action whereby people can judge whether the action leads to the goal: transforming structure. Reflexive monitoring is a everyday action and includes also the conduct of others (Giddens, 1984).
