Hans Georg Gadamer (1900-2002)

During the 20th century a lot of humanistic thoughts came up. Hans Georg Gadamer is one of the most important humanistic philosophers of this time. Gadamer has written about hermeneutics, a specific kind of philosophy which deals with the understanding and interpreting of human beings and their ways to express themselves (Vasterling, V). Gadamer’s work is concentrated in four areas. Firstly the development and elaboration of a philosophical hermeneutics. Secondly he concentrates on the dialogue within philosophy, with respect to Plato and Aristotle, but also to Hegel and Heidegger. The third one is the engagement with literature and with art, poetry in particular and the fourth is what Gadamer himself calls practical philosophy (Malpas, J, 2009). Further, Gadamer applies a rather dialogical approach, which makes his work more accessible than for instance work of Plato and Aristotle. The most well known work of Hans-Georg Gadamer is considered to be his book ‘Wahrheit und Methode’, in English ‘Truth and Method’. Warhheit und Methode
