Personality and socialization is one of the four aspects of 'social action', distinguished by Nigel Thrift. This is an important component of contextual regional geography.

Research in the field of 'personality and socialization' includes investigations that deal with the spatial components of the constitution of personality (self, identity, and individuality). This is understood as a historical geography of life-path development. According to (Benno Werlen, 2009): "personality cannot be universal, but rather has to be understood as a continuously negotiated expression of social relations, including economic relations in the work process, that can vary from region to region and from locale to locale" (p.6). The constitution of personality is both the result of individual activity as social interaction.
